What Is Colon Hydrotherapy

Colonic room
Colon Hydrotherapy, or colonic, is a safe and effective method of cleansing the colon of waste material by repeated, gentle flushing of quality filtered water. This procedure not only cleanses, but will reshape, retone, and rehydrate the colon. A colonic is NOT the same as a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is a medical procedure done in a hospital that involves a camera being inserted into the colon to identify polyps and other colon abnormalities.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM A COLONIC?
Anyone can benefit from a colonic, but especially those with chronic constipation (not eliminating at least 1/day), people with IBS, Chronic Fatique and those with undiagnosable chronic illness. People with alternating constipation and diarrhea will likely benefit as well as this situation usually occurs because the colon is so impacted with hard stool that only liquid can squeeze between the intestinal wall and the impacted stool. This person may think they are not constipated because they are going several times per day in the form of liquid non formed stool, but the fact is this senerio is always representative of an extremely impacted and toxic colon. Others may choose to use colonics to prep for a colonoscopy to avoid possible electrolyte imbalance from taking the prescribed preparations. Even if you are healthy and have no problems, a colonic in the spring and fall is an excellent way to potentially promote optimal health.
WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE A COLONIC?
Colonics are not advisable for people who have had abdominal surgeries or given birth in the last 3 months, currently pregnant, miscarriage in the last 6 months, active colon cancer, ulcerative colitis, rectal bleeding, abortion in the last 6 months, aneurysm, cirrhosis, colostomy, GI hemorrhage or perforation, kidney failure, heart attack within the last 3 months, tumor in the rectum or colon.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING A SESSION?

Colon Hydrotherapist with client
During the session at SHR you will lie on a table and will be completely covered with a soft sheet at all times. You will have a wonderful view from the second floor window of the surrounding rolling hills. Aromatherapy, using essential oils, is used as a relaxant and soft peaceful music is played in the background if desired. Every effort is made to make your experience a comfortable and pleasant one.

A speculum the diameter of a dime is inserted 2" into the rectum and a waste hose is then attached to the end of the speculum. This hose is then attached directly to the septic line, so waste is completely contained within the system. Water from our state of the art filtration and purification system is slowly introduced into the colon and gentle massage is performed on the abdomen by the therapist to assist in removing unwanted waste and toxins. The clear disposable waste hose allows the client to observe the removal of waste if they so choose. You will remain on the table for approximately 45 minutes for the entire session.

There are several additives that are optional during and after a session for an additional charge:
  1. Organic coffee can be used during a session to stimulate the liver to release toxins.
  2. Food grade hydrogen peroxide is another option to be used during a session to oxygenate and promote a healthy terrain in the colon.
  3. Acidophilus implants are used post session to restore natural flora in the colon.
PREPARING FOR A COLONIC
Your results and the way you feel after a colonic will greatly depend upon what you eat and drink before and after.

It is not required, but doing a castor oil pack the night before or morning of can be extremely beneficial as it will allow the eliminatory system to relax and potentiate toxin release. See below for Castor Oil Pack Instructions

The day of your colonic eat a light breakfast and do not eat two hours prior to your appointment and do not drink one hour before.

After your colonic drink a glass of water before leaving SHR as this will stimulate a release if your body needs one. It is okay to eat within an hour after a colonic, but the next 2 meals need to light and easy to digest foods such as soups, baked squash or soft boiled eggs.

You should NOT eat raw nuts, seeds, vegetables, salad, fresh juice or other hard to digest foods.

The liver flush shake is not required to prepare your body for a colonic, but you can expect better results if it is taken the morning of the colonic & the diet instructions are followed.

It is NOT recommended for your first colonic.

Plan to do the Liver Flush Shake shortly after waking on an empty stomach.
1"x1/4" chunk of fresh ginger root or ½-1tsp ground ginger
    Juice of 1 grapefruit
    Juice of 1 lemon
1-4 tbsp cold pressed olive oil
    Pinch of cayenne powder
    1 clove of garlic
Blend all together until frothy and drink at room temperature within 15 minutes
HISTORY OF COLON HYDROTHERAPY

Dr. Bernard Jensen
Dr. Bernard Jenson, forefather of colon therapy, believed that "no matter what conditions we have in the body, they are affected by the bowel whether it is good or bad." When the AMA was founded, people turned to pills or surgery to promote good health. Unfortunately, this was not the answer. Dr. Jenson further explains that most people are raised to regard bowel habits as a negative affair. "By neglecting the colon, many people have gone down a path to improper health, one must address the colon first and foremost."

Colonic machines were routinely found in doctor's offices and hospitals at the turn of the 20th century and they were usually administered first thing when one entered the hospital.

Battle Creek Sanitarium 1900's
Dr. John Kellogg, founder of Kellogg cereal, had a health sanitarium in Battle Creek, MI in the early 1900's and used colonics as a daily regimen on his patients.

The fact that mainstream food is so highly processed and mostly genetically modified has led to more congestion and disease in the body, especially the colon. Colon therapy can benefit all regardless of their level of health. Even if you do not have obvious bowel/intestinal issues, colonics will encourage one to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
HOW DO WE BECOME TOXIC?
Every living thing on Earth is inevitably and unknowingly exposed to toxins daily. In man's quest to make life "easier", he has unwittingly poisoned himself and every other thing that has life. An example of this is our exposure to lead. In the early 1900's lead was added to fuel to make engines more efficient. This one act blanketed the Earth from Pole to Pole in lead. Our bodies, specifically our bones, contain over 100 times more lead than the bones of people that lived prior to leaded gasoline. There are toxins we knowingly expose ourselves to daily in the food we eat and the liquids we drink. For each one of those we know of, there are hundreds that we are victims of circumstance. If you simply breathe, eat and drink, your body is burdened by thousands of toxins daily that it was never intended to process. It makes no difference whether you are an athlete who feels great or you are the person who is tired and has little energy. All can benefit from assisting the body in reducing their toxin burden through colonics. To see what environmental hazards may be affecting you, go to www.scorecard.org and type in your zip code of where you live now and where you grew up. You will quickly learn how burdened our bodies are and that all can benefit from reducing this ever present load and potential health danger.

Castor Oil Pack
Castor oil packs were one of Edgar Cayce's most famous remedies, but castor oil has a long history of traditional medical use dating back to ancient Egypt. Derived from the castor bean, the oil was traditionally used internally as a laxative. However, now it is primarily used externally due to its potential toxicity.

A castor oil pack is placed on the skin to increase circulation and to promote elimination and healing of the tissues and organs underneath the skin. It is used to stimulate the liver, relieve pain, increase lymphatic circulation, reduce inflammation, and improve digestion.

Castor oil packs are a traditional natural cure for a range of conditions, such as constipation, bile insufficiency, liver condition such as cirrhosis, scleroderma, headaches, appendicitis, arthritis, colitis, intestinal disorders such as stricture and colon impaction, incoordination between nervous systems, neuritis, and toxemia.

How to Make a Castor Oil Pack
Castor oil packs are made by soaking a piece of flannel in castor oil and placing it on the skin. The flannel is covered with a sheet of plastic, and then a hot water bottle or a warmed rice pack is placed over the plastic to heat the pack.

A castor oil pack can be placed on the following body regions:

The right side of the abdomen to stimulate the liver; inflamed and swollen joints, bursitis, and muscle strains; the abdomen to relieve constipation and other digestive disorders; the lower abdomen in cases of menstrual irregularities and uterine and ovarian cysts.

Safety Precautions
Castor oil should not be taken internally. It should not be applied to broken skin, or used during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or during menstrual flow.

Materials
  • Three layers of undyed wool or cotton flannel large enough to cover the affected area
  • Castor oil
  • Plastic wrap cut 1-2" larger than the flannel (can be cut from a plastic bag)
  • Hot water bottle
  • Container with lid
  • Old clothes and sheets. Castor oil will stain clothing and bedding.
Place the flannel in the container. Soak it in castor oil so that it is saturated, but not dripping. Place the pack over the affected body part. Cover with plastic. Place the hot water bottle/rice pack over the pack. Leave it on for 45-60 minutes. Rest while the pack is in place. After removing the pack, cleanse the area with a dilute solution of water and baking soda. Store the pack in the covered container in the refrigerator. Each pack may be reused up to 25-30 times.

It is generally recommended that a castor oil pack be used for 3 to 7 days in a week to treat a health condition or for detoxification.
